STI Prevention in Tennessee

STI prevention is about understanding your options and choosing strategies that fit your individual circumstances. LifeLine Health provides education, testing guidance, and prevention services to help Tennessee patients reduce their risk of sexually transmitted infections without shame or judgment.

STI Prevention Strategies

Safer Sex and Testing

A healthcare provider can help you understand prevention strategies based on your sexual history, potential exposures, and individual health needs. These may include:

  • Condom and barrier use: using condoms, dental dams, and other barriers correctly and consistently
  • Reducing exposure: understanding practical ways to reduce STI risk based on your individual circumstances
  • Partner communication: discussing STI testing, prevention, boundaries, and results with sexual partners
  • Appropriate testing: determining which STI tests and testing frequency may be appropriate based on your sexual history, potential exposures, and body sites involved

Vaccination

Vaccines can help prevent certain infections that may be transmitted through sexual contact. Depending on your age, vaccination history, health, and individual circumstances, a healthcare provider may recommend vaccination against HPV, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, or other vaccine-preventable infections.

HIV Prevention: PrEP and PEP

PrEP: PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, is an HIV prevention option for people who do not have HIV and may benefit from additional protection. When used as prescribed, PrEP is highly effective at reducing the risk of acquiring HIV.

PEP: PEP, or post-exposure prophylaxis, is an emergency HIV prevention option used after a potential exposure. PEP must be started within 72 hours of a potential HIV exposure and should be started as soon as possible.

A healthcare provider can help determine whether PrEP or PEP is appropriate based on your individual circumstances.

Doxy PEP

Doxy PEP, or doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis, is a prescription prevention strategy that may reduce the risk of certain bacterial sexually transmitted infections for some people.

Doxy PEP is not appropriate for everyone. A healthcare provider can review your health history, recent STI history, potential exposures, medications, and other relevant factors to determine whether doxy PEP may be appropriate for you.

If doxy PEP is prescribed, your healthcare provider can explain how and when to take it, potential side effects, recommended STI testing, and appropriate follow-up.

What to Expect From an STI Prevention Visit

An STI prevention visit may include:

  • A confidential discussion about your sexual health, concerns, and prevention goals
  • Recommendations for appropriate STI testing based on your individual circumstances
  • Discussion of HIV prevention options such as PrEP or PEP when appropriate
  • Discussion of other prevention options, including vaccination or doxy PEP when clinically appropriate
  • Education about reducing the risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections
  • Connections to additional healthcare resources when needed
