STI Prevention

STI Prevention in Tennessee

Prevention isn’t about perfection. It’s about having tools that fit real life. LifeLine Health’s STI prevention in Tennessee focuses on education, practical planning, and prevention options that reduce risk without shame or judgment.

Core Prevention Tools We Review With Patients

Safer sex strategies that work in real life

  • Condom and barrier use: how to use condoms, dental dams, and other barriers correctly and consistently
  • Lower-risk choices: practical ways to reduce exposure based on your activities
  • Partner communication: simple, non-awkward ways to talk about testing, boundaries, and results
  • Testing cadence that matches your life: a plan based on your partners, exposures, and body sites, not a one-size schedule

Vaccines that prevent specific infections

Some infections linked to sexual activity are vaccine-preventable. Depending on your history and risk factors, your clinician may recommend vaccines such as HPV and hepatitis A or B.

HIV Prevention: PrEP and PEP

PrEP: A prevention option for people who are HIV-negative and want strong protection. When taken as prescribed, PrEP can reduce HIV risk from sex by about 99%.

PEP: An emergency option after a possible HIV exposure. PEP must be started within 72 hours, and the sooner the better.

Doxy PEP

A newer prevention option is doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (doxy PEP). Current CDC guidance supports doxy PEP for certain people at increased risk, primarily some men who have sex with men and transgender women with a recent history of bacterial STIs. It is not for everyone, and the decision should be individualized with a clinician based on your health history and risk.

What to Expect From an STI Prevention Visit

  • A private, nonjudgmental conversation about your goals and current risk
  • A prevention plan that may include a testing cadence and tools like PrEP or PEP when appropriate
  • Clear education you can use, without confusing medical jargon
  • Optional connections to additional resources when helpful

Medical disclaimer: This page is educational and not medical advice. If you believe you’ve had a recent HIV exposure, seek care immediately. PEP is time-sensitive.
